MRS. SHAW-NOBLES ROOM 302
WELCOME TO 7TH/8TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year at Ray Elementary. I hope that everyone had a relaxing summer. I am looking forward to learning and growing with all of my students. They all bring unique qualities and expertise to my classroom.
I would like to offer a little background on myself as an educator. This is my 15th year of teaching. I received my Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education from Roosevelt University, my Masters of Education in Teacher Leadership from Roosevelt University and my 2nd Masters in Literacy and Reading from Concordia University. I am currently finishing my Doctorate in educational Leadership in Literacy and Reading from Concordia University. I have spent the majority of my years of teaching as an 8th grade teacher.
As an educator, I believe that a student's education is an investment in their internal personal bank account where anything is possible if a person tries, maybe gets a little help or direction along the way, and never quits. Of course, it all begins with one's attitude as towards experiencing success, happiness, accomplishing goals, and any other positive attribute starts with the mindset a person gives himself/herself.
One other aspect to the recipe is most aptly put by Henry Ford: "Failure is only the opportunity to begin life more intelligently." It is through the mistakes people make that help them learn, so it is something not to be avoided but embraced. Plus, we must consider that we are meaning making machines who tend to impulsively judge everything in order to help us deal with the world we live in, so we will confront such inclinations to look deeper for the truth as we explore the day to day learning.
In the end, students will come to reflect upon their lives and education in a manner best said by Walt Whitman: "The powerful play [of life] goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?" It is this challenge and prior ideas that drive the work and journey my students will encounter throughout this year. This idea is accompanied by all the standards they need to master in building their historical knowledge. Students will learn this year that history is everywhere and their voices count towards the positive changes needed in hopes of not repeating the mistakes of the past. To begin this journey, let's start with the Latin phrase: "Carpe Diem." May this year support each student reach beyond their expectations as they grow and blossom into introspective, self-directed, confident, and powerful life-long learners.
The following is needed information about some of the classroom policies:
Expectations:
Only your child’s best behavior and work are expected and accepted at all times.
All students must:
1) Be on their honor. Students must do their own work on homework, class assignments, tests
and projects.
2) Respect themselves, classmates, and teachers. I tell the students to work as an ensemble.
3) Do their best. Always give 100% and be positive. School is more fun if you say yes to learning.
4) Be in attendance and be on time.
5) Students shall not engage in activities that could cause harm to themselves or others.
6) Students should respect themselves, peers, and their teachers.
7) Students are to have all homework completed on the day it is due.
8) Students must be prepared each day by having proper materials-- Having a pencil and paper every day is highly indicative of student success.
9) Students should dress in a respectable manner and follow the Ray handbook.
10) The policies in the Student Code of Conduct book must also be followed.
Current grades are posted regularly for student and parent viewing. Our classroom blogs include many of the assignments, assignment due dates, and a variety of other helpful information. Being connected to Class Dojo provides daily feedback about student behavior and important school information.
Thank you for your commitment to your child's education and we look forward to seeing you in the very near future.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shaw-Nobles PhD Candidate
